Installing Salon Iris on Windows 8

Installing Salon Iris on Windows 8

This article is a short tip on installing Salon Software on a computer running Windows 8. The Salon Iris software is designed for Windows 7 and currently (ships) with MS SQL 2005 Express (or simular). The issue is that Windows 8 currently does not support MS SQL 2005.

Before you proceed with the installation wizard of Salon Iris you will first need to download and install MS SQL 2008 R2 Express. You'll want to make sure you download MS SQL 2008 R2 with the extra management software to be able to enable the "su" account.

Once MS SQL 2008 R2 Express is installed and the "su" account is enabled you can run the Salon Iris installation wizard. Be sure to skip the installation of the 2005 MS SQL when prompted. On loading of the Salon Iris application you'll need to provide the password for the 2008 "su" account.

Current Cost Energy Monitor OSX 10.7.x

Current Cost Home Energy Monitor on OSX using a USB-RJ45 Cord

We've grew tired of paying consistently high electric bills and decided to get to the bottom of the power hogs in our home. Below are directions on how to configure your Current Cost Energy Monitor to your OSX 10.7.x computer. This article does not cover how to install the actual device into your home electric panel to start basic energy tracking. Please reference the directions that are included with the device for home installation directions before proceeding.

UPDATED ARTICLE POSTED HERE. PLEASE SEE HERE.

Requirements:

  • Current Cost EnviR Wireless Home Energy Monitor -- Amazon
  • Black & White Current Cost USB Data Cable (USB-RJ45) --- PowerSave
It's worth noting that the USB Data Cable must be the Prolific Technology USB-RJ45 USB to serial cable and not a generic USB-RJ45 cable. I have tried a Ethernet to USB and Cisco RJ-45 to USB cable and they will not work due to the design of the device. Again you must purchase a Current Cost data cable. I was able to locate a USA vendor off the Current Cost website. Click here for the order page.

Installation of Current Cost Data Cable & EnviR on OSX 10.7.x Directions:
  1. Connect USB Data Cable from EnviR to your USB port on your computer (RJ45 jack in on bottom of EnviR device).
  2. Download & Install Prolific OSX 10.7.x USB-Serial Driver. Click here to download.
  3. To verify installation:
    - Open Terminal
    - Enter "ls /dev/tty.*" (without quotes)
    - Verify that "/dev/tty.usbserial" (or simular) is displayed
A USB to Serial connection will also be displayed in your "System Information" panel on OSX under USB. However, it's best to verify via terminal that the device is listed under "/dev".

Now that you have a active USB to Serial connected you can try out the different software downloads from the Current Cost software download page.
